What Would You Do with a Gig?

Posted by: Cameron Cushman on June 22, 2011 Source: e360 Blog

Kansas City will soon receive internet connectivity that will be one hundred times faster than anywhere else in the world.  What should they do with it?

Last year, Google announced its Google Fiber contest, where communities could compete to receive internet connection speeds at one gigabit per second, or about 100 times faster than anywhere else in the world.  Over a thousand communities, counties and municipalities applied. Google recently announced that it had selected two cities, Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri, as the first winning cities.

Many groups, including universities, economic development organizations and local government leaders, pulled together to create the most appealing proposal possible, but now that they’ve “won” the contest, the region now has to decide how to use its newfound computing power. Now that Kansas City knows it will be the fastest internet in the world, what should the city do with it? Its as if the proverbial dog finally caught the car.

In some sense, the possibilities for the application of Google Fiber are endless.

Medicine, research, development, transportation, engineering, and many other industries could all find innovative uses to exploit this new technology. But how does a region know where it should place its bets when it receives such a potentially game-changing technology, months, if not years ahead of everyone else

It’s clear that Google wants this project to yield new apps that can expand human welfare. Innovators and entrepreneurs from around the city are no doubt working to develop the most creative uses for this connectivity speed, but the area should look outside its own borders and solicit help from abroad.

So, what would you do with a gig?  How would you use faster internet speeds?  How could your business expand due to a quicker connection?

Let’s dream big here folks.  I’d love to hear your ideas!

Make "cloud" applications that help developing countries have faster access to our resources. Kind of a reverse speed app... Give them the speed, help them accelerate their web and mobile apps and enterprises from KC.

Foster any type of business which develops high speed storage and networking centers. These are Cloud computing, Mainstream Storage centers for backups and offline storage, NOC centers for networks,Web hosting, and Central clearing houses for information type businesses.

It sounds very good, but why only in those cities? There are developing nations that needs that service more than any city in the USA.

Nothing special - the reason being that this connection speed is much faster than anything that is worth doing. Downloading huge courses? - only a few gigabytes. Downloading HD movies? How much can you download and where to store them? What should be interesting is what coming up next when this connection speed spreads around the USA and the world... I have a funny feeling that web 3.0 is just around the corner.

Any where else in the world? Chattanooga's EPB has gig service to its entire customer base. It was up an running last year. Lamp Post Labs is sponsoring a contest next year in Chattanooga to engage the best and brightest in answering the "What to do with a gig?" question. You can wait for Kansas City to catch up or come to Chattanooga and try it today.

As a med student at KUMC, I'm really excited about several possibilities:

-Making audio/video live streams available for classes, histopathology, dissection lab, and clinical skills

-Creating a fast, standardized EMR system easy for all med staff to use for KUMC patients - A system that could be replicated at other hospitals, clinics, etc

-Collaborative teaching and research opportunities with other schools and institutions with real-time videoconferencing, synchronized screen displays, and other tools

-Entrepreneurship and innovation improvements in taking KUMC research from lab bench to bedside

-Higher speed in certain research formats, such as generating and analyzing images and bioinformatics

-KC becoming a hub for creating and testing social media strategies to improve patient/doctor interactions and creating platforms for people to access, add to, and maintain their health information and records in partnership with medical professional.

I can't wait for Google Fiber technology to become a reality in KC. There are endless opportunities for R&D to make delivery of healthcare better, especially in creating ways to make preventative medicine profitable and effective.
